Radical Upheaval: All are welcome

God comes in the womb of a woman who teaches a silenced male religious leader. All are invited to connect with the indwelling divine presence—Emmanuel, God with us.

From Silence to Song

I led our small house faith community this past week in Kate Bowler’s Group Advent Guide, exploring the Com-Passion of God Emmanuel, God with us in suffering. The text was the song of Zechariah, voice opened for the first time in nine months, as he held his son, pouring out praise to the Great Spirit who sees us “through eyes of grace” (Luke 1: 68 TPT).

Zechariah, the religious leader of the community, was silenced when he left the temple in a religious ceremony, questioning the possibility of a barren womb becoming filled with a living embryo.

As I took a few steps back, I realized that his song came three months after that same baby leapt in Elizabeth’s womb in recognition of the Christ-child within Mary’s womb. As the two women greeted each other, the Spirit stirred the embryos to recognize each other.
